Recruitment Process
After receiving your application, we will acknowledge receipt by e-mail. Candidates chosen for interviews will be contacted after the application deadline has passed. The Calgary Office will schedule first interviews for September 25 and 27, 2023 and second interviews during the week of October 2, 2023.
We thank you for your interest in our firm and are excited to meet potential students. We will be happy to answer all questions during the interview. We will not be conducting any meetings outside the formal recruitment process. Please refer to our online resources for information regarding the firm.

As a summer student, you will be paired with a formal mentor, however our entire team is deeply committed to helping you navigate the intricate world of law, providing valuable insights and sharing their extensive experience. Our mentors make themselves readily accessible and eager to assist.
There are opportunities for mentorship in formal meetings, including ones specifically created for juniors to advance their skills, through one-on-one interactions, and regular check-ins. We will ensure you receive the guidance you need to excel.
2. What does a typical day look like?
A typical day for a summer student at our firm is a dynamic and enriching experience. We strive to ensure you will get a well-rounded and engaging summer program that empowers you to learn, grow and contribute meaningfully to our legal endeavors.
As a summer student, it will be common for you to attend questionings, applications, mediations and other hearings alongside our seasoned lawyers in order to gain hands on exposure to the diverse facets of our legal practice. Summer students actively contribute to the team by assisting in research initiatives, compiling comprehensive reports, drafting of applications and other essential documents. We follow an immersive learning experience to deepen our students understanding of the legal process and hone their practical skills.
3. Are you in the office full-time?
Summer student will be expected to be in the office full time throughout their summers. Most of our legal team is also in the office full time which will ensure summer students will always have access to the guidance and mentorship they need.
4. What opportunities are there for professional development?
We prioritize the professional development of our team, including summer students. Our mentorship program, led by experienced lawyers, ensures that student receive personalized guidance and support throughout their time with us. The lawyers at the firm will ensures students are networking with clients, have access to a wealth of legal resources, workshops and seminars to create an environment that will nurture their growth and advancement with a legal career.
6. What kind of firm activities take place and what is our team building like?
We prioritize fostering a collaborative and cohesive team environment through a variety of engaging activities. Throughout the summer, we organize team building events that strengthen relationships among colleagues and create a sense of camaraderie.
There will be many opportunities for students to get to know all members of the Brownlee LLP team through Friday snacks and drink, lunches, coffees, social events, client events and sporting events.

8. Are there rotations among the practice groups?
As a summer student, there are no formal rotations, however the lawyers in our diverse practice areas will strive to ensure you have experience in all our practice groups. In the Calgary Office, our focus is on Insurance Defence Litigation, Municipal, Employment and Commercial Litigation work.
