BRING YOUR FULL SELF, EVERY DAY.
Brownlee LLP is committed to promoting Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging in our firm and in our communities.
Our Pursuit of an Inclusive Workplace
Diversity and inclusion is at the core of what we do. From solving complex legal matters to providing strategic advice to our clients, our diverse team makes our experience richer and our presence stronger. Our strength lies in embracing our differences – respecting each individual’s values and cultivating their professional aspirations.
Our commitment to diversity allows us to attract and retain the best lawyers regardless of their race, religion, gender identity, or sexual orientation. We hire them because they are simply the best. When our lawyers bring their full selves to work, we know that we will all thrive and succeed. This welcoming environment enables us to come up with innovative solutions and offer practical advice to help our clients.
Incorporation of Gender Inclusive Pronouns
As our internal efforts to provide a strong and inclusive workforce continue to evolve, so too must our external efforts.
In recognition of individual rights to gender identity and expression, members of the Brownlee LLP team can choose to include their preferred pronouns such as “she/her/hers,” “he/him/his”, “they/their/theirs” – in their email signatures.
Through providing the option to choose the preferred gender identity pronouns in our email signatures, we hope this show of support for the LGBTQIA2S+ community will help to further the acceptance of gender inclusivity and help to normalize the use of gender-neutral pronouns in society.
All people have the right to have their gender be identified correctly, and deserve to be treated with respect and dignity.
Committed to Women’s Equality
On International Women’s Day we celebrate the accomplishments of women who refused to accept the status quo. We recognize that their battle for rights a century ago has put us on a path for equality that, although it has improved, is far from ending.
As a firm, we are committed to equality for women in the workplace. These different experiences and backgrounds form the backbone of how we meet the needs of our clients. Likewise, showing respect for others in our everyday interactions with clients, family, friends only strengthens our community.
Brownlee LLP is proud to be a Member of Phase Two of the Justicia Project.
The Justicia Project is a voluntary program facilitated by the Law Society of Alberta aimed at retaining women lawyers and promoting diversity in the private practice of law.
The Project’s aim is to create a shift in culture and lead the way for innovative, systemic change that works for the profession and the public.
The Law Society of Alberta is progressing Justicia through two targeted phases.
Phase One saw over 13 national firms already involved in Justicia programs across Canada, extend their participation in Alberta’s Justicia project.
Phase Two offers the opportunity for regional, mid-sized and smaller law firms from around the province to participate.
Participating firms will develop and implement policies and programs, with the collaboration and assistance of the Law Society, focusing on four core areas:
- Tracking demographics;
- Parental leave programs and flexible work arrangements;
- Networking and business development; and
- Mentoring and leadership development skills for women.
The written commitment involves participation in Justicia meetings and measurement of your firm’s experience.
The model programs and policies created through this program will be shared with Alberta’s legal profession as a whole, paving the way for widespread usage.
