Litigation Associate (Calgary Office)

Brownlee LLP’s Calgary office is recruiting a civil litigator with 5-7 years of insurance coverage expertise in civil litigation with a focus on insurance defense. The successful applicant must have experience in all facets of civil litigation including but not limited to; questioning, contested chambers applications and dispute resolution.  The successful applicant will work as part of a team of dedicated professionals providing litigation services to a wide variety of clients including insurance companies, municipalities and various corporate clients.  The Calgary office will offer the successful applicant a dynamic, entrepreneurial but collegial environment with the opportunity to work on challenging and interesting matters.

Research Lawyer (Edmonton Office)

Brownlee LLP is recruiting an enthusiastic, service-oriented Research Lawyer based in our Edmonton office.

In this role you will:
• Support our lawyers and clients by conducting in-depth legal research relevant to court cases and hearings
• Draft opinions, legal arguments factums and submissions to administrative tribunals
• Provide value-added reference services by evaluating, analyzing and summarizing information from a wide variety of sources
• Act as a resource for students and lawyers on research methodology
• Attend and participate in various meetings with the practice groups

Key Competencies:
• Juris Doctor or law degree; in good standing to practice law in a Canadian jurisdiction
• 3 years of legal research experience with a Canadian law firm or equivalent experience (e.g. courts or government departments)
• Comprehensive knowledge of law, legal systems and legal processes in Canada
• Strong search skills using Quicklaw, WestlawNext Canada, as well as other related news, business, and legal databases
• Ability to convey complex legal analyses in a practical manner
• Be able to communicate in clearly and concisely both in writing and verbally
• Self-motivated, detail-oriented, entrepreneurial individual who has the ability to work independently
• Strong time and project management skills are a must as the position entails work on multiple projects and includes time billing requirements.
• Approaches challenges with a sense of ownership, enthusiasm and initiative, focusing on client service excellence.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills
• Strong technical skills
