Brownlee LLP is recruiting an enthusiastic, service-oriented Municipal Research Lawyer based in our Edmonton office.  Our municipal lawyers practice in various core areas including administrative law, assessment, privacy, planning/development and utilities regulation. 

In this role you will:

  • Support our lawyers and clients by conducting in-depth legal research relevant to court cases and hearings
  • Draft opinions, legal arguments, factums and submissions to administrative tribunals
  • Provide value-added reference services by evaluating, analyzing and summarizing information from a wide variety of sources
  • Act as a resource for students and lawyers on research methodology
  • Attend and participate in various meetings with the practice groups

Key Competencies:

  • Juris Doctor or law degree; in good standing to practice law in a Canadian jurisdiction
  • 3 years of legal research experience with a Canadian law firm or equivalent experience (e.g. courts or government departments)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of law, legal systems and legal processes in Canada
  • Strong search skills using Quicklaw, WestlawNext Canada, as well as other related news, business, and legal databases
  • Experience in one or more core municipal areas (administrative law, assessment, privacy, planning/development, utilities regulation) would be preferred
  • Ability to convey complex legal analyses in a practical manner
  • Be able to communicate clearly and concisely both in writing and verbally
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, entrepreneurial individual who has the ability to work independently
  • Strong time and project management skills are a must as the position entails work on multiple projects and includes time billing requirements
  • Approaches challenges with a sense of ownership, enthusiasm and initiative, focusing on client service excellence
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Strong technical skills
