Brownlee LLP is a western regional full-service law firm with offices in Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver.

Brownlee invites all 2nd year Law students to submit their applications for an articling position with our Calgary office. Our Calgary office intends to hire one student to article with us during the 2025/2026 articling year. More information about our Firm can be found online at:

If you are interested in summering with our firm, please submit an application which must include the following:

  • a cover letter
  • a résumé
  • copies of all available law school and post-secondary transcripts (photocopies are acceptable)

Incomplete applications will not be considered. Reference letters may be included, but are not required.

We will be accepting Application Packages starting on May 13, 2024. The application period closes on May 21, 2024.

Interviews

Candidates chosen for interviews will be contacted after the application deadline has passed. Interviews will be scheduled during the week of June 3, 2024, as set by the Law Society of Alberta.

1. What is the mentorship like?

At Brownlee LLP, our mentorship program is characterized by its hands-on approach and open-door policy. We believe in fostering a supportive environment where guidance and learning are paramount.

As an articling student, you will be paired with a formal mentor and principle, however our entire team is deeply committed to helping you navigate the intricate world of law, providing valuable insights and sharing their extensive experience. Our mentors make themselves readily accessible and eager to assist.

There are opportunities for mentorship in formal meetings, including ones specifically created for juniors to advance their skills, through one-on-one interactions, and regular check-ins. We will ensure you receive the guidance you need to excel.

2. What does a typical day look like?

A typical day for an articling student at our firm is a dynamic and enriching experience. We strive to ensure you will get a well-rounded and engaging summer program that empowers you to learn, grow and contribute meaningfully to our legal endeavours.

As an articling student, it will be common for you to attend and conduct questionings, applications, mediations and other hearings alongside our seasoned lawyers in order to gain hands-on exposure to the diverse facets of our legal practice. Articling students actively contribute to the team by assisting in research initiatives, compiling comprehensive reports, and drafting of applications and other essential documents. We follow an immersive learning experience to deepen our students’ understanding of the legal process and hone their practical skills.

3. Are you in the office full-time?

Articling students will be expected to be in the office full time. Most of our legal team is also in the office full time which will ensure students will always have access to the guidance and mentorship they need.

4. What opportunities are there for professional development?

We prioritize the professional development of our team, including students. Our mentorship program, led by experienced lawyers, ensures that students receive personalized guidance and support throughout their time with us. The lawyers at the firm will ensure students are networking with clients, have access to a wealth of legal resources, workshops and seminars to create an environment that will nurture their growth and advancement with a legal career. We also cover all costs necessary for the CLPED or equivalent courses.

7. Are there rotations among the practice groups?

In the Calgary Office, our focus is on Insurance Defence Litigation, Municipal, Employment and Commercial Litigation work. As an articling student, you will rotate between Litigation and the other practice areas.
