Insurance defence requires a lawyer who quickly adapts to the evolving landscape of laws, regulations, and judgments. Amid the constant changes, Brownlee partner Leilani Karr provides practical solutions to complex issues.

Specifically, Leilani practices construction deficiency claims, occupiers’ liability, motor vehicle collision, property damage, and professional liability claims.

“My strength is in finding the most practical solution to a given problem – there are often opportunities in the life of a file to seek a resolution prior to trial,” she explained.

“That said, there are cases when a trial is necessary, and I am equipped to guide a file from the very initial stages through to judgment.”

She has appeared at all levels of court in British Columbia and has extensive experience in alternative dispute resolution, including arbitrations and mediations. Leilani handles Strata Property Act disputes and related claims before the British Columbia Civil Resolution Tribunal, and she has also appeared before administrative tribunals and appears regularly in chambers both in British Columbia and Alberta.

Reflecting on her experience, Leilani offered the following advice to first-year lawyers: “We were all there at one point – keep breathing! If you’re willing to put in the work, there will always be colleagues who are happy to provide guidance and answer questions when you get stuck along the way.”

In her spare time she enjoys spending time with family and friends, and getting out for a run.
