James joined Brownlee as an articling student in 2021 and now practices in access to information and privacy law. James advises clients on navigating their rights and responsibilities under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and the Personal Information Protection Act, providing representation before the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner. As a member of the information and privacy law team at Brownlee, James is experienced representing both public and private sector clients in the preparation and adoption of records retention, security and surveillance, privacy, and anti-spam legislation policies. Passionate about the complex area of privacy law, James is an active member of the executive for the Alberta North Privacy and Access Law subsection of the Canadian Bar Association.

Also adept in municipal and administrative litigation matters, James has appeared before the Alberta Court of Justice, the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta, and the Court of Appeal of Alberta.

While completing his law degree at the University of Alberta, he was an editorial board member of the Alberta Law Review and completed an internship at the Court of Appeal of Alberta. James furthered his extensive research skills working as a research assistant, examining municipal government jurisdiction over environmental issues and volunteered with Student Legal Services in Edmonton.

Prior to attending law school, James worked for the Alberta Utilities Commission as a regulatory analyst, and completed a Masters’ degree in environmental and resource economics at the University of Alberta.

When he is not running through Edmonton’s river valley, James tries to travel as much as possible.
