Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety Act requires employers take specific steps to address and prevent harassment in the workplace. This presentation will focus on the risks and obligations arising for employers in relation to allegations of workplace harassment under OHS with consideration given to related human rights and WCB exposure. Practical tips will provide employers with a “best practices” outline for ensuring compliance and mitigating risk in their workplace.
Council Code of Conduct in Practice
You have a Council Code of Conduct Bylaw, but now what? This councillor ethics session will examine leading practices for conducting code of conduct investigations, ensuring adequate procedural fairness, imposing sanctions and balancing confidentiality with public disclosure requirements.

As public bodies, almost all decisions made by municipalities are open to challenge. These challenges can be costly and time consuming and can frustrate municipal efforts to make progress towards community goals. This presentation will discuss the proactive steps that Council and administration can take to reduce the likelihood of challenges and to resolve challenges efficiently and successfully.
Environmental Compliance: Responding to Inspections and Investigations
Municipal operations can create environmental risk. When the investigators come knocking, does your municipality know what its obligations and rights are? This session will identify the main environmental regulators affecting municipal operations, review their regulatory authority to inspect and conduct investigations, and provide practical advice on working with environmental regulators while endeavouring to protect the municipality, its personnel and elected officials.
